EC BUS MONITOR
General Statement of Job
Assists with the safety, movement, management, and care of students with special needs while on a school bus so students may enjoy the fullest possible avantage from the programs and offerings of the school system. Must exercise tact and courtesy in maintaining acceptable relations with parent/guardians of students transported and with school personnel.
Required qualifications
- High school diploma or GED, preferred
- Applicant must be 18 years of age and hold a valid NC state driver’s license.
- Applicant must hold or be eligible to obtain a CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Assists the bus driver in managing student behaviors on the bus.
- Assists students with loading/unloading the school bus and crossing the street.
- Lifts and carries students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
- Learns and adapts to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
- Supervises use of seat belts, safety restraint systems and wheelchair securement straps are secured as required.
- Follows emergency procedures and helps driver administer first aid, if necessary.
- Becomes familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to the driver.
- Helps driver keep bus clean.
- Assumes responsibility for performing the personal care required under the IEP during the pick-up, transporting and the unloading of students.
- Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.
Additional duties
- Demonstrates regular attendance and punctuality.
- Performs other related work as required.
- Becomes familiar with and follows procedures established by transportation and special education offices.
Essential knowledge and abilities
- Must be physical able to operate a school bus.
- Ability to brake and steer quickly in emergency situations.
- Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations.
- Must be able to react and respond quickly in emergency situations. Including braking and steering quickly to avoid accidents, and able to assist students out the rearmost emergency exit door in a timely manner.
- Ability to maintain discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
